CDC Update: XEC COVID variant is now circulating in the US
October 16, 2024 - KP.3.1.1 is still the dominant COVID-19 variant in the United States as it accounts for nearly 60% of positive cases, but the XEC variant is not far behind, recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data shows.
"CDC is monitoring the XEC variant," Rosa Norman, a CDC spokesperson told USA TODAY. "XEC is the proposed name of a recombinant, or hybrid, of the closely related Omicron lineages KS.1.1 and KP.3.3."
The latest data shows a rise in each variant's percentage of total cases from Sept. 15-28, as KP.3.1.1 rose by 4.6%, and XEC rose by 5.4%. Previously, the KP.3.1.1 variant made up 52.6% of cases and XEC accounted for 5.3% from Sept. 15-28.

Flu Season Abound
As we head into the colder months, it’s critical to stay on top of your health, especially with new variants of COVID-19, like KP.3.1.1 and XEC, currently making the rounds. According to the latest CDC data, KP.3.1.1 continues to be the dominant variant in the U.S., responsible for nearly 60% of cases. Meanwhile, the XEC variant is rising, accounting for 10.7% of infections. While the overall COVID-19 test positivity rate has dropped across various regions, these variants highlight the importance of vigilance as respiratory illnesses, including the flu, become more prevalent during the colder months.
This blog will guide you through smart health practices and essential products that can help you and your family stay protected from respiratory illnesses, including air purifiers, masks, and home test kits. With these strategies, you can minimize your risk and enjoy a safer, healthier winter.
Why Is Winter a High-Risk Season for Respiratory Illnesses?
During the colder months, respiratory illnesses like the common cold, influenza, and COVID-19 spread more easily. This is due to a few key factors:
- Indoor Living: People tend to stay indoors more often in winter, increasing exposure to airborne viruses in confined spaces.
- Cold Weather: Cold, dry air weakens our mucous membranes, which are our body’s first line of defense against respiratory pathogens.
- Reduced Sunlight: Less sunlight means reduced exposure to Vitamin D, which is essential for immune health.
Step 1: Improve Indoor Air Quality with Air Purifiers
One of the most effective ways to reduce the transmission of airborne viruses in the office and home is by improving indoor air quality. Air purifiers with HEPA filters can trap airborne particles, including bacteria and viruses, reducing the likelihood of inhaling infectious agents.
Benefits of Using Air Purifiers:
- Removes Viruses and Bacteria: HEPA filters can capture up to 99.97% of airborne particles, helping to eliminate pathogens like the flu virus and coronavirus.
- Allergen Reduction: Air purifiers also help reduce other airborne allergens such as dust, pollen, and pet dander, which can irritate your respiratory system.
- Cleaner, Fresher Air: Breathing clean air supports lung health and reduces the overall burden on your immune system.

Step 2: Practice Mask-Wearing in Crowded or High-Risk Areas
Best Practices for Mask-Wearing:
- Choose a High-Quality Mask: Opt for N95 or KN95 masks, which offer superior protection by filtering out at least 95% of airborne particles.
- Use Masks in Crowded Areas: When you’re in public spaces, especially indoors, wearing a mask significantly reduces your exposure to respiratory droplets.
- Stay Consistent: Keep masks handy for quick trips to the grocery store or doctor’s appointments, particularly if you’re in a region with high rates of respiratory illness.

Step 3: Use Home Test Kits to Monitor Symptoms
Why you should have Home Test Kits:
- Early Detection: Early testing can help you detect COVID-19 and isolate yourself quickly, preventing the spread to others in your household.
- Convenient and Reliable: FDA-approved home test kits are easy to use and provide fast, reliable results in the comfort of your own home.
- Peace of Mind: Testing when symptoms arise gives you peace of mind and ensures you take the appropriate steps, whether it’s resting, seeking medical advice, or isolating.

Step 4: Stay Proactive with Hygiene and Preventive Measures
In addition to using air purifiers, masks, and home test kits, it’s essential to stick to basic hygiene practices to minimize the risk of catching or spreading illnesses.
- Wash Hands Frequently: Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after coming home from public places.
- Sanitize Surfaces: Disinfect frequently touched surfaces like door handles, smartphones, and countertops using sanitizing wipes.
- Stay Hydrated: Cold weather often leads to dehydration, which can weaken the immune system. Drink plenty of water to keep your body functioning at its best.
- Get a Flu Shot: The flu vaccine is still one of the best ways to protect yourself from the seasonal flu, which can prevent serious complications.
Final Thoughts: Stay Ahead of Winter Illness
Staying healthy during the winter months requires a combination of prevention, hygiene, and readiness. By incorporating these smart health practices into your daily routine—using air purifiers to improve air quality, wearing masks in public, and keeping home test kits on hand—you can significantly reduce your chances of contracting or spreading respiratory illnesses.
Taking these steps now will ensure that you’re prepared for whatever the season brings, so you can focus on enjoying winter instead of dealing with illness.
